The events of the 4th Chios Festival, organized by the North Aegean Region, continued on 26th of August 2025 with an enchanting musical evening at the crowded Port of Kardamyla.
The Performance
The event, titled “Sounds and Melodies from the Aegean,” brought together two prominent Greek musicians and two exceptional Turkish musicians. Together, they engaged in a “musical conversation” from Constantinople, bridging the traditions and cultures of the Eastern Mediterranean.
The Artists
The stage featured a unique collaboration between masters of their craft:
- Sokratis Sinopoulos: An internationally acclaimed lyra virtuoso and Assistant Professor at the University of Macedonia in Thessaloniki.
- Nikos Papageorgiou: A cantor for the Orthodox Community of Yeniköy (Neochori) in Istanbul, specializing in the tanbur, the lavta, and Byzantine music.
- Derya Türkan: A leading Istanbul lyra player and recipient of the 2015 “Musician of the Year” Itri Music Award.
- Çağlar Fidan: A singer and researcher of Ottoman music who draws inspiration from the people and places of Constantinople.
A Cultural Connection
The musicians took the audience on a journey through sounds that unite the past with the present and the Aegean with Asia Minor. It was a captivating exploration filled with emotion, spirituality, and vivid imagery, highlighting music as a bridge for cooperation and friendship and Chios as a meeting point for Culture and Tradition.
