During the 4th Chios Festival—a vision and mission of the North Aegean Region—Chios became a meeting point for leading personalities from around the world. It transformed into an open theater of Culture and Contemporary Creation, uniting ideas, values, and eras in a way that only Art can.
Historic sites, archaeological monuments, iconic landmarks, and atmospheric castle-villages served as the dreamlike backdrop for a unique cultural coexistence.
Archaeology and Melodies by the Sea
At Emporios (Aug 25), within the archaeological excavation site overlooking the Aegean, Vassilis Lambrinoudakis (Professor Emeritus of Archaeology, NKUA) and Rebecca Sweetman (Professor and Director of the British School at Athens) discussed Chios’ history and antiquities. The evening concluded with the Lyrica choral ensemble, presented by Yiannis Tzoumas, who read a greeting from Sir Roderick Beaton.
In the picturesque port of Kardamyla (Aug 26), a musical encounter from both sides of the Aegean featured Sokratis Sinopoulos and Cäglar Fidαn (lyre virtuosos) alongside singers Nikos Papageorgiou and Deryan Turkän, proving that music transcends borders and bridges cultures.
Byzantine Heritage and Medieval Atmosphere
At Nea Moni (Aug 27), Byzantine scholars Teresa Shawcross (Princeton) and Ioli Kalavrezou (Harvard) analyzed the masterpiece architecture and art of this UNESCO World Heritage site. The event included a greeting from the Minister of Culture, Lina Mendoni.
Later that evening in Avgonyma, composer Thodoris Economou presented a unique musical universe titled “Kyrie Ekekraxa” (Lord, I Have Cried Unto Thee), featuring Antigone Pappou.
Castelli: Debating the Future (AI, Ethics, and Innovation)
The historic 15th-century estate Castelli hosted a series of thematic discussions (Sept 1–3) regarding modern challenges:
Technology & Ethics: Nektarios Tavernarakis (University of Crete/FORTH) discussed AI in medical research and the human genome. Spyros N. Pollalis (Harvard/Athens College) focused on education, while Konstantinos Filis warned of misinformation.
Philosophy: Lou Marinoff (City University of NY) and Xiaojun Ding (Jiaotong University) explored AI ethics through the lenses of Western and Eastern philosophy.
Environment & Art: Architect Nikos Sifounakis and Lydia Karra (ELLET) discussed environmental issues. Art was explored by Michele Casamonti and artist Nakis Panayiotidis.
Biotechnology & Science: Journalist Tasoula Eptakoili interviewed Dr. Stelios Papadopoulos, the “father” of biotechnology. Academician Stamatis Krimizis took the audience on a journey through space, while Dr. George Nounesis (Demokritos) presented research on quantum computing. Darwin Caldwell (IIT) discussed the evolution of “Humans and Humanoids.”
Musical Interludes: The nights at Castelli were filled with cinema songs by Ninetta Vafia, Fotis Nezis, and Sofia Papadimitropoulou, as well as a captivating performance by internationally renowned Chian soprano Christina Poulitsi, accompanied by Dimitris Giakas.
International Collaborations and Cinema
Italian Night: At the Genoese Castle of Chios (Aug 31), in the presence of Italian Ambassador Paolo Cuculi, musicians from Genoa’s Teatro Carlo Felice performed works by Beethoven and Paganini. This was followed by traditional South Italian dances by the group Agriko.
Tribute to Stelios Kazantzidis: At the Homerion Cultural Center (Sept 5), the film “Iparcho” was screened. Director Giorgos Tsemberopoulos, screenwriter Katerina Bei, and actress Asimenia Voulioti engaged in a discussion moderated by Mary Avgerinopoulou.
The Greek National Opera: At Petrokaravo, Vrontados (Sept 6), the GNO Ballet presented the diptych “Return of the Summer” with choreographies by Konstantinos Rigos and Yiannis Mantafounis. The sunset over the sea provided a sublime aesthetic experience.
Gastronomy: In Agios Georgios Sykoysis (Sept 7), a feast of local flavors was led by Chef Petros Syrigos.
Anavatos: The festival concluded at the “Mystras of Chios.” In the presence of its sole inhabitant, Mrs. Smaragda, actress Karyofyllia Karabeti delivered a staggering performance of Medea’s monologue, accompanied by maestro Markellos Chryssicos on piano.
The 4th Chios Festival was held under the auspices of UNESCO Greece and the Embassies of Italy and Switzerland. It proved that Chios is not just a place of memory, but a vibrant source of inspiration for the future.
