Chios, with its rich history and creative spirit, once again became a focal point of international dialogue by hosting the conference “Looking to the Future: Innovation, Entrepreneurship, Culture” at the Mastic Research Center, held within the framework of the 4th Chios Festival.
This event transcended the boundaries of a typical meeting, gathering prestigious personalities from Greece and abroad—representatives of Science, Politics, Business, Civil Society, and Culture. Through their interventions, they shared knowledge, experience, and vision, fostering synergies and creating a “community” where intellect, creativity, and thought hold a leading role.
The conference served as a significant platform for exchanging ideas and proposals in a place whose heritage is to unite cultures, broaden horizons, and spark collaborations.

The event was opened by the Governor of the North Aegean, Konstantinos Moutzouris, who spoke warmly of the Mastic Research Center, highlighting the Region’s support and funding for its creation and operation, while expressing his commitment to its further development. Furthermore, he announced new development plans for the North Aegean islands, including actions for livestock farming in Lesvos, the blue economy in Chios, and tourism in Samos.

Subsequently, Konstantinos Ganiaris, President of the Mastic Research Center, presented the Center’s initiatives, emphasizing a readiness to collaborate with institutions and businesses so that mastic and its derivatives continue to serve as a catalyst for growth and extroversion for the island.

Selim Yenel (Ambassador & President of the Global Relations Forum): Presented a visionary outlook on the future of Greek-Turkish relations. He noted that despite historical tensions, there is immense potential for cooperation in energy, health, AI, and agriculture. He stressed that innovation and entrepreneurship cannot thrive without culture, which acts as a bridge of understanding.

Prof. Dr. Hakan Ürey (VP for Research & Innovation, Koç University): Shared his journey from research to entrepreneurship, illustrating how academic knowledge leads to global technological achievements. He discussed innovations in biomedicine, ophthalmology, and robotics, as well as the startup ecosystem at Koç University.

Apostolos Valtas (President of the Panhellenic Pharmaceutical Association): Emphasized the pharmacist’s role as a guardian of health and a driver of innovation. He envisioned the “Pharmacy of 2040” as a modern hub of social care, chronic disease support, and prevention.

Konstantinos Giannopoulos (President of “The Smile of the Child”): Presented the organization’s 29-year legacy. He highlighted their crisis response mechanisms, international collaborations, and a new digital app, stressing that the organization acts as a catalyst between state bodies and society.

Maria Loizidou (Professor Emerita, NTUA): Analyzed sustainable resource management and the circular economy. She addressed waste management in Chios, European targets, and innovative systems like “green kiosks” and desalination to combat water scarcity.

Antigoni Lymperopoulou (CEO of the Hellenic Development Bank of Investments): Highlighted the Bank’s role in supporting Greek innovation over the last 25 years and emphasized the symbolic importance of investing in the Mastic Research Center.

Andriani Manetta (CEO of Victorious Network & Marketing Director at Hanson Robotics): Presented advancements in robotics and AI, discussing both the vast possibilities and the ethical responsibilities. She showcased examples where technology creatively intersects with culture.

Dionysis Mantelis (VP of the Botsis Foundation): Addressed disinformation as a major threat to democracy and economy, highlighting the Foundation’s initiatives to combat fake news and the misuse of AI.

Dimitris Bourantas (Professor & Rector of New York College): Outlined a model for sustained business success, focusing on strategy, continuous learning, and the role of the leader who inspires rather than just manages.

Alexandros Sarakakis (Head of the Sarakakis Group): Provided a historical overview of the Group, showing how innovation and flexibility ensured survival through difficult times. Today, the Group invests heavily in circular economy practices.

Stratos Simopoulos (Chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Research & Technology): Emphasized technology and AI as development drivers for the North Aegean, helping to showcase history and cultural landmarks.

Angela Stathi (President of Digital Boost & Co-founder of Brazil Tech Connect): Presented innovative technologies like blockchain and satellite applications to tackle marine pollution, alongside incentive models to encourage youth to remain and create on the islands.

The conference was successfully moderated by journalist Korina Georgiou, who ensured a seamless flow and highlighted the core essence of each intervention.
Conclusion
The conference at the Mastic Research Center demonstrated that Chios and the North Aegean are at the forefront of global developments. This evening was more than a series of speeches; it was a declaration of cooperation, progress, and extroversion, proving that the North Aegean is a laboratory of ideas with international resonance.
